LCHH's 2018 Builds started April 72018 NWMA Build - Abeka Family

The Coalition again participated in two builds. For our 29th build, we worked with NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity on their Marietta Faith Build. Our portion of the build started with Interior Framing on April 7, 2018 and ran through May 12. The house is for the Abeka family who helped us with the build. Originally from Ghana, Emmanuel Abeka has been in the United States for 14 years and is now a U.S. Citizen. They are thrilled to be purchasing a home of their own in a clean and safe neighborhood. The house is located at 147 Gramling Street in Marietta. It was dedicated June 16, 2018. See Photos of the build & dedication.

2018 NCG Build - Onabanjo FamilyOur 30th build will consist of two days working with Habitat for Humanity of North Central Georgia. The house is located at 6025 Kemp Drive in Acworth in the same neighborhood as our 2017 build. Our days there are June 2nd and 9th working on siding. The homeowners are Mujidat (Temmy) Onabanjo, her mother, and her children Samuel and Saleh. The family came to the United States from Nigeria in 2006. Temmy has trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant and now finds her work in the maternity unit at Wellstar Kennestone extremely rewarding. They are all thrilled to have their own home. See photos of the build.

Build Schedule

The Coalition's part in the 2018 Build Schedule begins April 7th with Interior Framing at the Marietta site (147 Gramling Street) and continues through May 12th for Painting and Trimwork. We then switch to the Acworth site (6025 Kemp Drive) with Siding on June 2 and June 9. The dedication of the Marietta house is currently scheduled for June 16, 2018 while the dedication date Acworth house is not yet known. Our schedule is subject to change. Check back here often. To verify that you have the most current download of the schedule, check the "Rev" version and date in the lower left corner.

Release forms

There are no longer paper waiver forms for adults as it is all done online. There is a waiver box to check when you register online to work on a build project and to sign up for a particular date. Our two build projects will require separate registration and sign-up. The two processes are slightly different and each will require a separate userid and password which can be re-used in future years. Below are links to download instructions for each of the two build sites. Note that if you only plan to work at one of the two sites, you need only register for that site.

NW Metro Atlanta Registration & Sign-Up Instructions. Sign-up for the Lutheran Coalition portion of the build which begins April 7, 2018 (Marietta Faith Build) is done online in two parts. First, a volunteer profile must be created if you don't already have one from a previous build with NW Metro Atlanta. Then after signing in with your volunteer profile (you'll need your email, first name and password), you can register for a work date. This link will allow you to do both: http://cerv.is/m?0053rLutheran18 . Or you can download instructions for creating a NW Metro volunteer profile or registering for a NW Metro build date.

North Central Georgia Registration and Sign-Up Instructions. We don't yet have specific instructions for signing up for our two days (June 2 & June 9, 2018). Using these dates and the "Show Calendar" option, you might be able to sign up on North Central Georgia's website, https://habitat-ncg.org/how-to-engage/volunteer/. When details are available , we'll post them here.

General Build Information

DRESS: Wear work boots or sturdy gym shoes; jeans or work clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen. Loose fitting clothing should be avoided because they can catch on ladders or tools.

WHAT DO YOU BRING?: Bring work gloves, hammer, measuring tape, pencil, tool belt and nail apron if you have them. Put your name on anything you want to be sure to get back. Some tools will be available there, but if you have your own, it saves you from the possibility of there not being enough to go around. Breakfast will be provided for all participants starting at 7:30 am. Lunch will be provided at noon. Water will be available throughout the day at the site.

BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS!! If you ever have safety questions concerning a task assigned to you, please talk to the house leader or a crew leader. Look before you hammer! Being accidentally hit or hitting someone else with a hammer can be avoided if we are aware of those around us. Only lift loads that you feel comfortable with and use your legs instead of your back. With so many volunteers on site, there are always enough hands to help out. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. If you have waited until you are actually thirsty, it is too late! Be aware of your body’s response to high humidity and heat. Do not overwork yourself and rest as needed.

CANCELLATIONS: If you need to cancel or change dates, there are instrutions for doing so in the online signup instructions above. If the weather is so bad that you don’t want to work, don’t go. Otherwise, if it is unpleasant but tolerable, work will be going on.
